Our approach: this guide presents comparison criteria. It does not claim to be based on personal testing of a specific product.

The grinder sits at the centre of the machine

Grind settings help tune extraction, but changes should be gradual and follow the manual. Automation makes service easier without eliminating the variables introduced by the beans. Freshness, roast level and storage also influence the cup.

Milk drinks trade convenience for cleaning

A manual steam wand takes practice but keeps the milk path simple. An automatic system provides repeatable results while adding tubes and containers that need frequent cleaning. Check which parts can actually be removed instead of relying only on the presence of an automatic cleaning program.

Match the tanks to your routine

A small water tank may suit one person but become irritating for a family or office. A large bean hopper is not always better if coffee sits exposed for too long. Estimate daily drink volume and check whether the tank and hopper can be reached beneath your kitchen cabinets.

Understand recurring maintenance

Emptying the tray, rinsing the brew group, descaling and replacing filters are part of ownership. Some machines have a removable brew unit; others rely on an internal program. No design is maintenance-free, so choose a routine you are realistically willing to follow.

Calculate the complete cost

Add filters, cleaning products and possible repairs to the purchase price. Look for service options and common spare parts. A simpler machine that is maintained well may be a better purchase than one offering dozens of drinks you never use.
