Our approach: this guide presents comparison criteria. It does not claim to be based on personal testing of a specific product.
Light the task without glare
A desk lamp should illuminate the work area without shining directly into your eyes or reflecting on a screen. An adjustable arm helps position the light opposite the hand used for writing. Base stability matters as much as the advertised reach.
Balance the lamp with the room
A desk lamp should not be the only light source in an otherwise dark room. Strong contrast may feel uncomfortable. Several brightness levels can adapt to different times of day, but a clear control is often more useful than a complicated interface.
Colour temperature
Warmer light may suit a relaxed setting, while a more neutral tone is often chosen for detailed tasks. Preferences vary. If the lamp offers several modes, check whether it remembers the last setting and whether switching between modes is straightforward.
Base, clamp or wall mounting
A base is easy to reposition but occupies desk space. A clamp frees the surface if the desktop is compatible and strong enough. Measure desk thickness, arm movement and cable routing before choosing.
Secondary features
Wireless charging, USB ports and timers can be useful when they match your habits. They should not distract from arm quality, light diffusion and switch accessibility. A desk lamp is first and foremost a lighting tool.
