List the devices you need to charge

A phone, tablet and laptop do not require the same amount of power. Start by checking the maximum input supported by each device and the cable type it needs. A more powerful charger will not automatically charge everything faster: the device negotiates the amount of power it can accept.

Total power may be shared

On a multi-port charger, the largest number on the box often represents total output. When several devices are connected, that power is distributed according to rules set by the manufacturer. Look for the port-allocation table rather than relying on the headline figure.

The cable matters just as much

An unsuitable cable can restrict charging even when the charger is capable. For higher power levels, confirm the cable rating and whether an identification chip is required. Length also affects convenience: a short cable may be fine at a desk but frustrating beside a distant wall outlet.

Compact size, heat and safety

Newer components can make chargers smaller, but warmth during fast charging is still normal. Choose an identifiable manufacturer, documented protection features and the relevant safety certification for your market. Be cautious with spectacular claims that are not supported by clear specifications.

The sensible choice

One suitable port is enough for a single phone. A multi-port model can replace several adapters while travelling. For a laptop, verify the exact power and charging protocol it needs. Leave enough spare capacity to connect a second device without cutting the primary port below the required output.
